How a Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) Recall Works
When the CPSC has found a product to be potentially dangerous, it follows this procedure:
- Discovery - The CPSC, through testing or consumer discovery of one of the more than 15,000 types of consumer products it has jurisdiction over, from automatic-drip coffee makers to toys to lawn mowers, finds a product to be defective or harmful to consumers.
- The Product is Taken off of the Shelves - The CPSC uses statutory authority to authorize product removal from the market.
- The Public is Informed - The CPSC and the company marketing the product issue a national press release. The CPSC often works with a company to draft a letter to purchasers, distributors, etc., to issue a press release, and to determine the scope of the recall.
- Collection of the Product/Refunds Awarded - The product is collected and refunds, if applicable, are awarded. The CPSC also may order repair or replacement of the defective product.
If you suspect that a product you own is defective, contaminated or otherwise the subject of a recall/alert, here are a few steps you can take:
- Immediately cease using the product or, if it is a vehicular issue, take the vehicle to a certified mechanic or the vehicle dealership.
- Check the model number to confirm that the product is defective.
- Consult the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
- Contact the manufacturer.
