In April 2007 I purchased my 1st KLR650 at Mike’s Cycle in Placerville. I purchased the extended 4 year service plan as well. I was a fan, and still am of the Suzuki DR650, I had 4 of those in a row. I always purchased the 3 yr plan, and Suzuki honored their agreements. Kawasaki it seems does not.

Since I have purchased this bike, I have done nothing but spend money on it. I never even rode it off pavement, and it began to shed parts, like the wind screen, side covers etc at 500 miles. Obviously, no one bothered to bolt anything on this bike. The rear brakes
Kept disintegrating, I went thru two sets of pads and a rotor by 10k miles, the carb leaked, the fuses kept blowing, and the cooling system leaks. The stock tires were worthless and were gone at 5000 miles. I had to constantly add oil, in between scheduled services, it burned oil like crazy.

At 11k Miles I developed a dangerous intermittent. As soon as the bike warmed up, always ran hot….The carb seemed to be cutting out, like it was out of gas. I took it to Mike’s cycle in Placerville, he charged me a bunch of money for an oil change and tune up, and two days later I had the same problem. As I was using the bike on the freeway,This was extremely dangerous during commute time. I took the bike to MDK Motorsports in Folsom, where they diagnosed it as a gas tank vent hose being pinched.
I road it about 4 days, and the problem returned. I took it back to MDK and they said the cleaned out all the gas lines…again the problem returned, the bike was overheating, running bad. I checked the forums and someone suggested it might be the smog emissions system. and that is should be bypassed. I was hesitant to go back to the dealerAs I had spent for them to do basically nothing so far, for 3 trips on the same issue.
I called them to get an estimate on bypassing the smog, and they said they could do the bypass as they were a dealership. I did this myself at 12k Miles, and it seemed to solve the Stalling problem, however; the bike was still burning oil and overheating.

I scheduled an oil change, radiator flush and 15k mile scheduled maintenance at MDK about 2 weeks ago. I road the bike to work, when I got off work I headed for MDK and noticed a noise when starting the bike. I mentioned this when I ped it off and they said they would check on it.

Apparently, the noise was my cams. They said they would need to split the case and get
a determination from the insurance adjuster, another 360. Without ever even coming out to look at the Bike, or talk to me, my claim was denied due to the engine being out of oil……duhh. I was told it would cost 4500 to fix my bike. I still owe 3000 on it. As far as I can tell the head needs to be reworked, the cams are scraped up, the piston (Looks fine but shows some heat discoloration) and rings looked okay. I had to spend another 65 tow the bike and box of parts home, after being charged 360, MDK did not provide me with a list of bad parts, and they did give me a complete manifest of what appears to beall the engine parts, with no part pricing or quantities. For 360 they simply ed the parts list? I asked for a shopping list if I had to rebuild this myself, obviously all I got was the shaft.

Even though I live in state that burdens us with smog devices, that destroy engines. One good thing about California is the lemon law. I’ll be waiting to hear from you. If you cannot offer a satisfactory resolution, I will contact an Attorney that specializes in the lemon law.
