I had a 1996 Buick Skylark. On or about 07302008, as I sat at a red light talking with a friend that was in the car with me, the drivers side air bag deployed, I heard my friend say 'is someone shooting a gun'! Then I relized that my airbag had just deployed. The car filled with smokepowder and the horn starting blowing. In shock, and not sure what had really just happened, i drove across the intersection to a parking lot. I called a friend that was juast down the road, and they came to the parking lot where I had driven the car. The disconnected the horn, and after a few minutes of standing around in shock, I drove the car about a block to my friends house. Where then we tried to stuff the airbag into the steering wheel so I could get home.

As scared as I was, I drove the car back home, about 75 miles away. I barley drove over 30 or 40 miles an hour. I got back home, and called the Buick dealer the following day. When I spoke to someone, (Dennis Otool) in repairs, I was told that I would have to foot the repair bill. When I explained that I had been on line and seen that there was a recall for this problem (the Airbag ) and why should I have to foot the bill, I was given A number to call. When I called this number, I was told that my car did not fall into the lot Numbers that had been on recall for this issue. As I did some more checking, I found that there was about 6 major recalls on my car. To my surprise I had 5 of the 6 recall problems with my car. Later I finally got in touch with GM Motors, and after afew days of returning phone calls back and forth, I was told to take my car to the local dealer. So I did. Later GM got back in touch, and told me that there had been a water leak in the car, and that is what caused the airbag to deploy. But that it should have been the passenager side that deployed, I explained that it was not the case, it was the drivers side that deployed. GM seemed puzzled. I explained that I beleived that I had a water leak in the firewall of the car, for when it rained the passenager side floor did get wet. (Water leak in firewall was one of the recalls). Still GM had no excuse as to why the drivers side airbag deployed. After about a week or so, I still had to car. GM had offered to buy the car back from me for 1200.00. Take it or not. If I decided to not take the offer, then I would have to foot the bill to have the car repaired. I felt like I had no other choice, so I took the offer, and started looking for a car to buy. I ask for a rental car until I got the check from GM, in turn, GM did supply me with a car rental. A 2008 Buick model. Before I received the check for the 1200.00, I had called GM back and told them that I had found a friend that had a car for sell for 3500.00, and that maybe they could at least up the offer to the 3500.00, so that I did not have to go into debt to replace my car. After all I wasnt tring to file a suit, I just wanted my car replaced. I was tring to buy a1997 Mercury cougar from a friend that had bought the car new, and I felt like it was a fair deal. I was told 'NO WAY' end of conversation. What choice did I have, I had to have a car, I was already inconveniced of not have a car, would have to return the rental when I received the check and still had no car.

I did receive the 1200.00 check, I had to borrow 2500.00 in order to buy the car from my friend.

I also, had a 400.00 pair of eyeglasses that were broke when the airbag deployed and yet to receive any funds as I was told I would to replace my glasses.

I have contacted a few attornies, but because I was not serously injuried or yet killed when this happened, I have yet found an attorey to take my case. But I havent given up yet.

I feel if I would have been seriously injuried or killed or someone elae would have been hurt or killed, GM would have been in a major suit. Yet they refuse to pay a mere 3500.00 to replace my car. I wasnt tring to buy a new car, or get over on GM, as they , I feel most diffently did get over on me.

I guess I should just be thankful myself or no one else was injuried and killed, and I guess GM feels the same way, but why wouldnt they??

My advise is that anyone buying a used or even new car, do your research first, look for any and all recalls before you buy and get injuried or killed.

Disappointed in GM Motors.
