Two years ago I graduated earning my Masters degree in IT Management. I was extremely proud and eager to take on the world. What I didn't expect was to have a hard time finding a job in my field. This wasn't supposed to happen. I earned the degree, I got the high grades and I was told getting your Master's give you a better edge. Well there were student loans to repay. How could I without a job. I deferred the loan and now in 2007 was discussing my account with a Sallie Mae representative who was in the process of sending me forbearance forms until I landed the great job I was so promised. The next day my loan was sold to USA funds and then turned over to a collection agency, DCS. A representative from DCS called me that next day. When I explained I was working with Sallie Mae, the DCS representative, Kim Harbeck, said that they no longer had my account and DCS was now in charge. Fine. I explained my situation and the uncompassionate Ms. Harbeck said this is none of her concern and I better come up with the full amount or my pay would be garnished and my credit would suffer. I said I don’t have the full amount and am willing to work with DCS. Again, Ms. Harbeck was not interested in anything I had to say. The full amount is expected.

Needless to say the trouble did not stop there. I have caller ID so I know when DCS has called. Each and every time my room mate answered the phone a different representative from DCS asks for me and each and every time a new tactic is used to get me on the phone, from it’s a family emergency to if I don’t get on the phone they will keep calling every 5 minutes. Had they stated exactly who it was and told my room mate that this was confidential and needed only to speak with me, I would have taken the calls. These tactics are unnecessary. Shame on Sallie Mae for pulling their tactics and selling off my loan without working with me after they promised to do so. Shame on DCS for their unethical tactics. And most of all, shame on the Department of Education for allowing such tactics.

I am currently working as an enrollment counselor at a University in CT. How am I supposed to work with students and tell them that the best investment they can make is in themselves when I have been treated so poorly. I didn’t expect to fall on hardship but I did expect Sallie Mae to work with me because of it. I was not avoiding the loan repayment, just trying to find out if there was any options for me. I was not even given this chance. So answer me this, U.S. Education Department: How can you say you are behind education and pushing students to enroll when you are not prepared to face such situations and you have the audacity to sell off loans? Are you really in the business of helping students? My advice is make sure that when you sell off the loans the student is not currently working with a representative and how about giving them to a collection agency that does not use such unethical tactics.
