US Dept. of Education and DCS,, Inc. (Diversified Collection Services) - Loan was satisfied 18 years ago,, and now is showing in default
18 years ago I enrooled in the Academy of Radio Broadcasting in Huntington Beach California. After approximately 1-2 months into the course I was hospitalized and placed on disability which lasted for a year. I was also advised by the physician that I should no longer contuinue the course of study as it would be too stressful and hinder my recovery. I contacted the schools Admissions Director and was advised to come in and complete paperwork that would nullify my loan and allow the school to refund all monies received directly to the lender, since I had not completed the equivalent of even one semester, and since my de-enrollment was due to a disability. At no time did I personally receive any money from the student loan, nor was I ever even advised that it had been approved and or funded.
Well, not receiving anything at any time other than the assurance from the school Admissions Director that all was fine and that I had no further obligation, I continued on with my life. At no time have I ever been able to use my 1-2 month education, nor is any of it transferrable to any other type of eduational course.
Here we are, 18 years later, and I am now getting letters of a notice of default. What the heck happened? Did the School keep the money received and have a good time or use it towards another students tuition? Did the US Department of Education get their money back, but decided they can get even more?
I am completely amazed and have since sent letters via certified mail to the US Dept. of Education, but as of yet have heard nothing. I am still within my so-called 30-60 day diputehearing period, but I am not holding my breath.
