Bayer Healthcare and Mirena IUD - My Mirena was ""LOST"" in my body
I had Mirena inserted in October of 2007, 6 weeks after having my second child. No side effects or issues ever occurred. In February of 2009 I discovered I was approx. 6 weeks pregnant. I called my doctor, had blood work and an ultrasound done to ensure I was pregnant, and to see where the IUD was located. At the time of the ultrasound, it was determined that it was in the uterus, just shifted from it's original position, thus the pregnancy occurred. I then went to another doctor appt. to 'remove' the IUD and had my doctor pulling, scraping and yanking on what she thought was strings to remove it. Clearly this pain was unnecessary, as there were no strings there, they were at that time thought to be inside the uterus. So she suggested I see another doctor in upstate Delaware, to have the IUD surgically removed. This would avoid any additional pain, since he could then use more force or extreme measures if necessary to remove it. I did, and he also performed an ultrasound in his office, and too thought he saw it in the uterus. I had my first outpatient surgery at the end of Feb. and he had to do a D and C to attempt to remove the IUD. I lost the pregnancy, and there was no IUD. After xrays, it was found OUTSIDE OF THE UTERUS, IN MY ABDOMEN, BEHIND MY STOMACH. So, after a second outpatient surgery in April, it was finally removed. Any medical item that is capable of being LOST in the body that way should not be available for purchase or ever placed in a person's body. Many women all over the country are relying on this product to keep them from getting pregnant for 5 years. It was the best idea for me at the time, not knowing if I wanted any more children. But look where it got me. I am out thousands of dollars in medical bills, thank God for insurance, because it could be a lot more, however, the pain, suffering and stress on me and my family is something insurance can't fix. I hope that others can learn from my story and that some day there is justice for those of us who suffered from this product.
