I had the Mirena IUD placed (three months after my second son was born) in December 2008. I was excited to hear about a birth control that I didn't have to worry about for five years, and that I was told would be 'perfectly safe' and ok to take with my high blood pressure and the medications that I was taking for it. It hurt. That I expected. I bled for 3 and a half months. I expected this as well.
Then one day, close to the end of March, I stopped bleeding. It was very sudden and hasn't returned at all. Nothing in the patient information told me to contact my doctor immediately if that should happen. Then the other unexpected and uninformed problems began. I started having trouble keeping my blood pressure under control about early April or late March. Medicine that worked during two pregnancies suddenly stopped being effective. I was put on different medicines, and I developed an allergy to one, and now as of June 2nd, 2009, the other has also started to fail in effectiveness and my blood pressure is spiking again. I have had bad headaches for the past two months. One was as severe as a migraine and sent me to the ER when normal painkillers wouldn't work. For the past several months my normally happy disposition has turned into a bleak depression. I am tired most of the time, even after a normal night's sleep. The headaches and fatigue has interrupted with my college courses to the point that what normally comes easily to me has become exhausting and my GPA suffered. My hands and feet started swelling badly about two months ago on an almost daily basis, my stomach feels bloated, and I have had several of what I had thought were yeast infections that wouldn't respond to the pill or creams. My normally high libido ped from sex with my husband four or five times a week to four or five times a month (if that). I have started (a month ago) developing acne worse than when I was pregnant or a teenager (I am 30) and my face swells now along with my hands. My lower back hurts badly even though I haven't had any injuries, and I have bad adbominal cramps almost daily now and for the past month and a half. Newer symptoms that started within the past three weeks include dizziness, lightheadedness, almost daily diarrea that occurs several times a day and puts me on the floor afterwards writhing in pain, and blurred vision on top of LED light looking bars that flash in my eyesight. I have been on diet pills (phentermine and acia berry to name a couple) to no avail and instead continued to GAIN weight on them. I have gained a lot of weight since getting the Mirena, and no diet, pill, or exercise even remotely s it or stops it. To make matters worse, I think I may be pregnant. (for the child's sake, I hope not because of the risks from the IUD)
I wasn't informed of any of the current side effects I'm having. Most started after I was off of all other medicines save for my blood pressure meds, and even those were changed and no difference happened in the bad side effects I am having. I adamantly read the information given for ALL medications that I take, both from the pharmacy and from the manufacturer; and not one word was listed about the blood pressure rising risks, changes in vision, severe headaches, diarrea, swelling of hands and feet, depression or lack of libido, or vaginal itching. Nor was acne, hair loss, or nausea. Hopefully they have d their information, because I for one would not have gotten the Mirena if I had known that all of these side effects were even possible with it. All I knew is that it causes irregular bleeding and pain right after insertion, cysts on ovaries, and etopic pregnancies. Those were do-able. The symptoms I have now are life ing and unacceptable. My quality of life and that of those that I live with have suffered immensely. I am still undergoing tests with my doctor to eliminate all other possibilities, but since Mirena is the only medicinething that I have been on or taking for the duration of my symptoms; the liklihood of it being Mirena is almost 100 now, and I will know for sure very soon. I will post an .
My advice to anyone that is wanting to get Mirena is to do your research. Then do some more. I didn't know my symptoms were coming from a 'totally safe' product until very recently (within the past few days). I also personally know 3 people now that have gotten pregnant on Mirena, and have either had a terrible pregnancy complications with it, or have had children born with severe birth defects. Do your homework and don't be another statistic. I am having a hard time trying to find out more information on the removal process before my health and life suffers more. It had made my life miserable with the incessant bleeding then one health problem after another. Trust me- the issues don't go away on their own after a time- they got worse. The 'wait it out' approach didn't work.
It isn't fair to suffer from a 'safe' product that didn't list all possible warnings of the health related risks. I wish I had never heard of Mirena.
