I had my Mirena Iud inserted in May 2008, the first few months were great, no real complaints. My periods which were heavy at times before the insertion of my Iud, became just 3-5 days of light spotting after the Iud was inserted. About 6 months after the insertion I started to have recurrent urinary tract infections. I have only had 1 urinary tract infection my entire life (i'm 38) before the insertion of the iud. I would take a course of antibiotics and the UTI would come back 1 week later. I have now been battling chronic Uti's for over a year now. I have taken so many antibiotics, the bacterial is becoming drug resistant. I am now required to take a very strong antibiotic daily for the next 6 months. Around the same time I started having urinary tract infections, I also started to have recurrent bouts with vaginal bacterial infections, which also require antibiotics. I have never suffered from an vaginal bacterial infection before the insertion. Since the insertion, I have had 4 vaginal bacterial infections. My doctors cannot give me an explanation as to why I'm having either of these infections, and think my IUD might be to blame. In the last 19 months I have also had 2 very painful cysts on my ovaries which would cause me to double over in excruciating pain after sex. Ovarian cysts ARE caused by IUD's, this I know.

According to the Mirena Iud literature side effects are supposed to improve after 6 months. I have had mine for a year and 7 months and I can tell you they haven't. I have experienced, nausea, breast pain and swelling (which did mysteriously disappear after 3 months) slight cramping in the middle of my cycle, lack of sex drive at times and moodiness, which eventually caused the end of a 2 year relationship. Basically, I feel pregnant ALL THE TIME! I have gone to my obgyn and had a urine pregnancy test on two separate occasions. They were both negative, just side effects. This has caused me great anxiety because I just never know if I am pregnant or if i'm not, i feel like I'm crying wolf all the time and driving everyone crazy (including myself ) in the process.

So it's now been 1 year and 7 months since my Mirena has been inserted and after about 3-4 months of mild side effects they now seem to be in full swing again. My period before last was almost like a 'normal' period, I started to bleed a bit heavier vs. my normal iud spotting. My last period (on Thanksgiving) was weird, brown clumpy, mucusy spotting, that turned to red spotting, then got heavier for a day and just abruptly stopped. About a week after that I started to have pregnancy symptoms, nausea, having to take a nap in the afternoon, lower abdominal crampiness, mild headaches, nasal congestion, hunger and crying at the of a hat. I feel like I'm on a emotional roller coaster! I'm not due for my period for another 13 days, but the symptoms are driving me insane! they are worse then ever and I don't believe they should be after a year. I am calling my obgyn tomorrow to have my iud removed whether I am actually pregnant (doubtful) or not. I can't stand the side effects and the constant wonderingworrying that I'm pregnant. If it turns out that I am pregnant, I will be posting to this site again to complain about that also.

So if you are thinking about getting a iud, i would suggest you don't. I had high hopes when I got mine, I did a lot of research and read all the complaints but thought it wouldn't happen to me. well it did..and it's been a nightmare.

I had Mirena inserted a couple of months ago and almost immediatly I started losing my hair in handfuls. I also expirenced dizziness, knee pain, loss of sex drive, and weight gain. I discussed in lenth the side effects with my OBGYN and these side effects were NEVER mentioned. I am having this thing removed immediatly before any more damage can be done to my body. I believe that my insurance company should be fully refunded for this product.
