My husband and I rented a car from Thrifty Car Rental in Charleston, S.C, as we usually do,on October 15, 2005 at 10:14 a.m. I was an additional driver while not authorized to sign on this particular credit card that we used to secure the vehicle. I knew that upon return, I would pay cash. I was late returning however, had a 59 minute grace period which put me at 11:13 with out an additional charge. I called to let the young lady named Jessica know that I be late and needed to use the 59 minute grace period and may have an additional HOUR that I was running behind on my travel. I was fully prepared to pay the 25 for the additional hour as stated on the contract. She stated ok and that she would 'let them know'.

I was an hour and 17 minutes late on my return (doesn't include the 59 minute grace period). Upon my return, I stood in the line for 15 minutes. When she checked me in it was 12:45. She told me my total was 117.25. I gave her 120.25 as I told the young lady that I would pay cash and not to charge my husband's credit card. She didn't know how to complete the transaction and asked the more experienced unidentified female how to do that. The UIF stated, hit cash, type in the calculator 117.25 and just give her the change. She then told her to hit the save button. Once I received my change she gave me a rental agreement that showed my payment of 117.25.

I signed as I usually do for the payment in cash. Upon looking at the rental agreement closer, to the right in a box that was not brought to my attention another charge of 136.00 for another days rental charged to my husband's card. When I questioned this- Jessica said she would let the more experienced person handle it and took another customer. I was finally helped by the unidentified female and was told that I was charged another 24 hours because I was late that hour. To my dismay, I contested and questioned the legality of this. So I stated, well since you just charged me 136 for another 24 hours, give me the keys back and I will bring it back tomorrow at 9 a.m.. By right, I paid for it and had I not brought it back I still would have had to pay the 136. She refused and called her manager John, who IS the most 'un customer friendly' so-called manager I have ever met.

Again, I questioned the legality of this, he stated it was legal and that he would not give me the vehicle back because the contract was closed. I told him the contract was closed because they charged my husband's card under false pretenses and that I am not an authorized signer for the credit card.
I signed acknowledging I paid the 117-It would have been and is illegal for me to sign that contract as the the cardholder. That would be committing fraud and was never my intent to do so, I signed based on the information highlighted by Jessica.

Needless to say, John re-rented the RAV4 to another customer that I was actually paying for. In essence, Thrifty reaped the benefits twice. There is just something not right about this. I came home and researched previous lawsuits and was unable to find something that related to the additional
charges for rentals an hour late- I contacted the cardholder (along w my husband) and told them of the unauthorized charge -hopefully we will be able to get these charges taken off. Needless to say, John the so-called manager is less concerned with keeping customers as I am even LESS concerned with
ever RENTING from Thrifty AGAIN! I'm sure I am not the only person that this has happened to, but I hope that I could be the last. There practices are not reasonable and are not just! Can anyone help? I know there are many brilliant attorney's out there that could help me take this adhesion contract and . . . it! Not to mention find that there is a Cause of Action--if so..maybe we can file a class action lawsuit on such unconscionable practices. Looking forward to hearing from SOMEONE!
