My Mirena IUD perforated my uterous.
I got my IUD in April 2006. For my follow-up placement appointment, my Dr. (whom I like and think is really competent) couldn't find the strings. A quick ultrasound showed my IUD high in my uterous. My Dr. just said that it would be harder to get out. So, I left it alone knowing that when I wanted it out it just might be a little more uncomfortable. Well, just a few weeks ago I wanted it removed because of the side effects of acne. I went in to the office and my Dr. tried for 20 minutes to remove it. It was excruciating. Finally he gave up and decided to put me under to get it out. A few days later I was in a surgery center under general anesthesia and my Dr. couldn't find it in my uterous. When I woke up he told me that it had probably fallen out on its own but we would do an x-ray to make sure. I knew that it hadn't fallen out. I just thought that I would notice that or have gotten pregnant. So a few days later I had my x-ray and then my Dr. phoned me the very next day to tell me that the x-ray showed that it had perforated my uterous and was in my abdomen by my left hip bone. Now I am scheduled for a laparoscpic surgery to get it out. I hope that the surgery goes well and that I can get this thing out of me! I will never consider another IUD nor recommend them. Now my worry's turn to whether I will be fertile in the future, what shape my abdomen is in after having this thing floating around inside me where it is not supposed to be. Since my experience and just talking to people, I think that uterine perforation is more common than 1:1000 that Mirena claims. I would love to be a part of the lawsuit that puts an end to IUDs.
