I had the Mirena put in 6 weeks after the birth of my twins. The doctors raved about it and seemed like a dream. At my checkup to make sure the strings were still in place teh doctor said that she could not find the strings but it was probably nothing to worry about. Just to be sure she sent me for an ultrasound, the ultrasound also did not show the IUD was in place so they set up an xray the following week the xray tech told the dr they were able to see it and were PRETTY sure that it was in place. This was not good enough for me so I asked them to reevaluate and they came back saying that the IUD had actually perforated my uterus and had to be taken out by laperoscopy in a couple of weeks and said it was no big deal. Well within a few days I began to get the most awful pain and was not even able to walk. I called the OBGYN and they said that it had nothing to do with the IUD and was more than likely my crohns disease. I had never had these symptoms for my crohns disease and decided to go to the ER. I was hospitalized for 4 days for a bowel obstruction which the DR said had everything to do with the crohns and nothing to do with the IUD. When the IUD was taken out the dr showed me pictures and the IUD was actually sitting on my bowel causing irritation. I feel like the company should do more research on the effects that the IUD could have on crohns patients and would like to see a lawsuit against them. If you have crohns disease I would think twice about getting this device.
