I have a 2002 Honda CR-V with 80,237 miles. Last year, at about 65,000 miles, the air conditioner compressor failed. While researching the problem, I found that many owners had experienced dramatic compressor failures, sometimes described as 'explosions'. Honda seemed to be aware of the problem, but did not cover the replacement under warranty. I had the compressor, condensor, and dryerevaporator replaced at a cost of about 1200.00 from a local shop. Honda quoted over 2200.00 for the repair.
Last month the new compressor, purchased new from a Honda dealer, failed. Honda quoted a repair price of over 3200.00, saying that they had to replace the compressor, condensor, dryerevaporator, and all the AC lines, hoses, and fittings. We have just ordered genuine Honda replacement parts (again) from Honda dealers, at a cost of just over 800.00. I will take the car to a local import specialty shop for repair. The labor estimate from that shop is about 750.00, so I will have a total of about 1550.00 in this repair. In two years, I will have over 2750.00 in repairs resulting from a faulty air conditioner compressor.
A quick search of Honda owner forums will show that most 2002-2004 Honda CR-V owners have the same problem. Honda has recieved many complaints, so they are aware of the problem and have decided to do nothing about it. I would like to see American Honda accept responsibility for the problem, and provide free replacement of the air conditioner systems and provide reimbursement for owners who had to replace their systems.
