2003 and 2004 Land Rover Discovery Series 2 has a defect in the engine block design that causes the oil pump to fail. The result is catastophic engine failure. Land Rover has known about the problem and issued a Technical Alert to its service managers. The Technical Alert issued March 12, 2003 states 'oil pump failures on the 2003 Discovery series II vehicles and subsequent engine damage may be the result of a manufacturing error.' It also states that 'the only effective repair currenty available is replacement of the complete engine.' The Technical Alert is numbered TA03 1201. My vehicle has been inspected by a mechanic who concurs that the failed enigine is the result of the this defect. Land Rover has refused to assist or replace the engine because the vehicle was 5 days out of warranty at the time of the failure. My contention is that the defect existed from the time of manufacture and that warranty time frame should not be an issue. There are many Land Rover owners with the same problem on the internet. Additionally the National Highway Safty Administration has 6 complaints for the identical issue on their website.
