Lawsuit Filed Over Strip-Searches

Case ID: 4382
Category: Civil Rights

Last Update: 08/09/2005
Country:

A class-action lawsuit filed against Seminole County accuses jail officials of conducting strip-searches for minor offenses. The lawsuit, filed in Orlando federal court, seeks class-action status to include anyone illegally strip-searched at the jail in the past four years.

The suit does not set an amount for financial damages, although settlements of similar cases elsewhere have brought awards in the millions of dollars.

The Seminole County Sheriff's Office, which operates the jail and has acknowledged the searches were illegal and violated jail policy, does not have figures on how many people were strip-searched.
