Morris Brown College Students Sue for Violations of RICO
A class action lawsuit has been filed in the Northern District Court of Georgia against Morris Brown College for violations of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO), which addresses the infiltration of legitimate businesses by organized crime. Class members seek damages, attorney's fees and costs of the litigation.
Specifically, the complaint alleges that from August 1999 to February 2002, the defendants knowingly and willfully devised a scheme to defraud the United States Department of Education and Morris Brown College and its students to obtain financial aid money and money from private lenders by means of fraud.
The complaint further alleges that the defendants obtained monies for students who never attended the college and received loan monies that were excessive and improper. As a result of the defendants' fraud, the plaintiffs have obtained unnecessary student loans.
