Civil Rights Class Actions
Civil Rights Lawsuits
Class actions involving civil rights claims may be based on either state or federal law. Most common are the discrimination actions brought under a federal civil rights statute to recover for racial, ethnic, gender, age, disability or other form of discrimination. Many of these actions are brought against employers, but they can also be asserted against an insurance company, a store or restaurant, a governmental unit, or another party that has discriminated against a class of people.
While civil rights class actions are often based on a statute, they can also be based on a constitutional provision, such as one guaranteeing equal treatment under the law. And not all civil rights class actions are filed on behalf of minority groups, as ""reverse discrimination"" actions allege discrimination against Caucasians or men.
