If you have lost your OnStar service in the past year, a proposed class action pending in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan may provide you with some relief. The case is titled In re: General Motors OnStar Litigation, No. 07-CV-11830, and is pending in Detroit, Michigan.

The OnStar subscription-based communications, monitoring and tracking service system was originally designed to communicate with analog cellular communications networks. Consequently, the factory installed OnStar hardware on many vehicles is analog-based.

In 2008, the Federal Communications Commission ("FCC") implemented a change in the regulations governing cellular service. The new regulations allowed cellular telephone companies to discontinue their analog networks beginning in 2008. Most cellular telephone companies discontinued their analog networks, and, as a result, OnStar ceased providing service to customers with analog-based OnStar hardware as of January 2008.

Currently, Michigan residents who purchased OnStar services in 2003 or later, and who have now lost their OnStar service due to the elimination of analog OnStar service, are needed in the In re: General Motors OnStar Litigation proposed class action pending in Detroit, Michigan.
