Round Rock, Texas Students Sue Over Immigration Protests

Case ID: 4955
Category: Civil Rights

Last Update: 12/22/2006
Country:

Fifty-one Round Rock High School students are suing the city of Round Rock and the Round Rock Independent School District over arrests at immigration protests in March 2006.

In a class-action suit recently filed, the parents of those students charge that the city and school district conspired to violate their children's rights.

More than 200 students were arrested during the rallies mostly for curfew violations. Many of those cases were dismissed, but there are still more than 40 misdemeanor trials pending in Round Rock.

Lawyers contend Round Rock's youth curfew ordinance cannot be enforced against juveniles participating in First Amendment activities protected by the U.S. Constitution.
