A 1999 class action lawsuit against the city of Ferriday, Mississippi and the firm that built the local water treatment plant, stemming from a 124-day boil-water order, has settled for $2,537,500.

The seven-year old case, Mortello v. the City of Ferriday and Owen and White, Inc., was filed by restaurant owner Gloria Mortello, who claimed she lost business due to a 124-day boil-water order from the city after the water treatment plant broke down, according to lawyers.

Mortello filed for all class members affected by the boil-water order, including town residents, business owners, owners and renters of residential and commercial properties, people who worked at businesses, school students, and patients in health care facilities, claim the lawyers that filed the lawsuit

The city of Ferriday, with a population of about 4,000, was declared a disaster area by the state at the time of the incident.

The class counsel has asked the court to approve an incentive award for the class representatives as well, claimed the lawyer handling the lawsuit.
