In a suit filed in Baltimore County Circuit Court, residents of three homes near Wally's Country Store Citgo Station state their well water has been contaminated with the gasoline additive methyl tertiary butyl ether. They claim the fuel company and gas station operators failed to properly monitor the storage tanks. The additive, commonly known as MTBE, has been linked to cancer in laboratory animals.

According to the suit, 11 of 26 residential wells near the station at Middletown and Rayville roads tested positive for MTBE. Plaintiffs are seeking compensation for medical monitoring and other expenses, and $200 million in punitive damages, according to the lawsuit.
