Other Family Cases of InterestClass-action status is being sought in a lawsuit alleging sexual abuse over a 50 year period at a Roman Catholic orphanage in Jefferson County, Kentucky. The suit was filed by Kentucky lawyers in 2004. The suit was filed against the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth and the Archdiocese of Louisville's Catholic Charities. The case alleges sexual abuse and other physical abuse over a 50 year period, primarily at three Kentucky orphanages.
Lead exposure should be one of the most preventable poisonings of childhood. An Illinois class action has been filed against Lead Industries Association, Inc. and numerous other companies on behalf of persons who allege that their children were exposed to the harmful substance because the companies conspired together to produce and sell lead-based paints with full knowledge of its harmful side effects, in violation of state and federal environmental laws. Bankruptcy and foreclosure are terrible things--there's no reason for the mortgage company to make them more costly than necessary. The parties have reached a tentative settlement in an action filed against mortgage sub-servicer Cenlar, FSB, on behalf of Pennsylvania homeowners who allege that the company collected attorney's fees that were not provided for in their mortgage contracts when the homeowners entered bankruptcy or defaulted on their loans. Class counsel will mail claims forms on request after October 24, 2003.
As we all know, toddlers will get in trouble given the right opportunity. The parties have reached a tentative settlement, apparently valued at $7.2+ million, in an action filed against Dorel Juvenile Group, Inc. on behalf of purchasers, owners, and former owners of full-size baby cribs with ten-spindle mattress platforms designed, manufactured, or sold by Cosco, Inc. Claim forms must be postmarked on or before December 24, 2003, to be considered valid.
Class-action Status Sought Against Old South Restaurant in Salmonella Outbreak Royal Dutch/Shell Group agreed to pay about $90 million to settle a lawsuit brought by its U.S. employees after the company overstated its oil and gas reserves by 41 percent.
The accord brings to about $240 million costs related to the overstatement, which led to lawsuits, criminal investigations and the ouster of Chief Executive Philip Watts. Insurance will cover $25 million of the settlement, Shell said in a statement July 12, 2005. |
