Patients Sue Over Tainted Tissue

A class action lawsuit was filed in federal court in Baton Rouge that claims a New York medical supply company sold illegal tissue and bone to Baton Rouge hospital Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center and other unnamed hospitals in Louisiana. Darrel Bourque says surgeons notified him in January that tissue transplanted in his neck during spinal surgery a year ago came from Biomedical Tissue Services.

Biotech Group Serono SA faces a new class-action law suit in connection with prescriptions of the AIDS drug Serostim. According to a press release, the new lawsuit was filed by a Seattle law firm in a Massachusetts court on behalf of health insurer GEHA.
 
Eligible motorists and health care providers have until Monday December 6th to claim a share in a $9.5 million jury verdict against Farmers Insurance. The verdict against Farmers was returned in a class action lawsuit in Multnomah County Circuit Court on December 5, 2003. Class members, eligible for a share of the jury award, include people who were injured in a motor vehicle accident between January 26, 1998 and July 31, 1999 and had a claim with Farmers Insurance. Also eligible for a share of the award are the doctors and medical clinics that treated the injured individuals. All claims must be postmarked no later than December 6, 2004. So far approximately 3000 individuals have filed claims. The benefits available are estimated at $207.00 per claimant.
 
A class action has been filed against drug manufacturer Impax Laboratories, Inc. (Nasdaq:IPXL) and certain of its officers and directors by stockholders who purchased the company’s common stock between May 5, 2004 and November 3, 2004. The action claims that the defendants violated federal securities laws by issuing a series of material misrepresentations to the market over this time period, thereby artificially inflating the price of the company’s securities. The stockholders seek to recover compensatory damages for the loss of value of their stock.
