FDA Updates Labeling for Viagra, Cialis and Levitra for Reports of Eye Problems

A small number of men have lost eyesight in one eye some time after taking Viagra, Cialis, or Levitra. This type of vision loss is called non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). NAION causes a sudden loss of eyesight because blood flow is blocked to the optic nerve.

Other Drugs / Medical Cases of Interest

Several class actions have been filed against drug company aaiPharma, Inc. (Nasdaq: AAII) and certain of its officers and directors by stockholders who purchased the company's common stock between July 23, 2003, through Feb. 4, 2004. The actions claim that the defendants violated federal securities laws by issuing a series of material misrepresentations to the market over this time period, thereby artificially inflating the price of the company's securities.
 
The parties have reached a $50 million settlement in an administrative action filed against pharmaceutical company Bristol-Myers Squibb Company (NYSE:BMY) filed by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The action alleged that, from the first quarter of 2000 through the fourth quarter of 2001, Bristol-Myers engaged in a fraudulent scheme to overstate its sales and earnings in order to create the false appearance that the company had met or exceeded financial projections set by its officers and earnings estimates established by Wall Street securities analysts. Persons who purchased, sold, or held Bristol-Myers stock during that period may contact the attorneys who prosecuted the case for more information.
 
Several class actions have been filed against biopharmaceutical company IntraBiotics Pharmaceuticals, Inc., (Nasdaq:IBPI) and certain of its officers and directors by stockholders who purchased the company's common stock between September 5, 2003, and June 22, 2004. The actions claim that the defendants violated federal securities laws by issuing a series of material misrepresentations to the market over this time period, thereby artificially inflating the price of the company's securities.
 
A class action has been filed against Blue Cross of California on behalf of policyholders who allege that the insurer wrongfully changed their healthcare policies' premium basis from their age at initial enrollment to their attained ages at renewal time, in violation of the terms of the policies.

A class action has been filed against Medco Health Solutions, Inc. and Merck & Company on behalf of California pharmacists, who allege that the companies engaged in anticompetitive behavior in violation of state antitrust law.
 
A class action has been filed against specialty pharmaceutical company American Pharmaceuticals Partners, Inc. (Nasdaq: APPX) and certain of its officers and directors by stockholders who purchased the company's common stock between February 19, 2002, and September 24, 2003.
