Other Family Cases of Interest

The class has been certified in a nationwide action filed against DaimlerChrysler Corporation on behalf of all owners of 1996 and 1997 Chrysler Town & Country’s, Chrysler Minivans, Plymouth Voyagers, Plymouth Grand Voyagers, and Dodge Caravans, who allege that the front-passenger airbags in these vehicles deploy with excessive force in low-speed accidents, possibly injuring children or small adult passengers.

Several class actions have been filed against home-building company Ryland Group (NYSE: RYL) and certain of its officers and directors by stockholders who purchased the company's common stock between October 22, 2003, and January 7, 2004. The actions claim that the defendants violated federal securities laws by issuing a series of material misrepresentations to the market over this time period, thereby artificially inflating the price of the company's securities. The stockholders seek to recover compensatory damages for the loss of value of their stock.

As we all know, toddlers will get in trouble given the right opportunity. The parties have reached a tentative settlement, apparently valued at $7.2+ million, in an action filed against Dorel Juvenile Group, Inc. on behalf of purchasers, owners, and former owners of full-size baby cribs with ten-spindle mattress platforms designed, manufactured, or sold by Cosco, Inc. Claim forms must be postmarked on or before December 24, 2003, to be considered valid.

On October 9, 2003, the trial court gave preliminary approval to the parties' proposed settlement of a class action filed against the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company on behalf of homeowners in 44 states and Canada whose radiant heating systems or snowmelting systems utilize Entran II hose. The action alleges that the hose is defective and causes damage to buildings in which it is installed. Under the proposed settlement, Goodyear will pay between $196 million and $236 million over five years, depending on the company's financial performance. The parties have not reached a settlement in a second class action that covers the six New England states of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont.

A class action lawsuit has been filed on behalf of non-custodial parents in the state of South Dakota. The suit alleges that the enforcement of child support and custody laws by the state’s courts and agencies unlawfully and unconstitutionally interferes with the parental rights of non-custodial parents.

Medicaid helps lower-income families pay for medical expenses that they have no way of covering. Judgment has been entered against the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration on behalf of the families of certain mentally ill children forcing the administration to pay for the children's long-term care in residential institutions. The judgment will not be final until all possible appeals deadlines have passed.
