Attorneys File Lawsuit Over Landfill

Report Fraud
Case ID: 4822 | Environmental | 05/30/2006

Lawyers filed a lawsuit seeking class action status against a landfill, claiming that waste brought in from Canada is causing harmful odors.

The lawsuit claims that area residents have complained the Carleton Farms landfill receives a significant amount of waste from Canada whose noxious and harmful odors interfere with residents` ability to use and enjoy their property.

The 640-acre landfill is one of the largest in North America and receives more than 1 million tons of garbage from Toronto, Canada annually. About 10 to 20 percent of the waste received by the landfill is sewage sludge.

The news release said Sumpter, Michigan officials are aware of the problem but the township collects an estimated 65 percent of its annual general fund from its trash royalties.

"It`s not even their own trash and yet it affects their quality of life and their property values. This lawsuit is their only recourse," said the lead counsel for the plaintiffs.

The lawsuit is open to area residents of Sumpter, Michigan.
