Grease Co-Writer Sues Cruise Lines

Case ID: 4649
Amount At Issue: $100,000,000.00
Category: Miscellaneous

"Grease" co-creator Jim Jacobs filed a $100 million class-action federal lawsuit in New York charging multiple cruise ships with stealing his broadway performing show. Jacobs' suit charges cruise lines have staged thousands of performances of "Grease" through the years without paying or receiving the necessary permission.

In addition to the huge damage pay-out for copyright law violations, Jacobs is seeking an injunction halting all unlicensed Broadway shows aboard ships.

"They're doing productions not approved by the authors, changing it in ways the authors would never permit, and then they don't pay," Jacobs' lawyer stated.

The suit names 17 ships, many owned by Royal Caribbean Cruises and Carnival Corporation.
