A Knox County Superior Court justice granted approval of a class action settlement against former funeral home director Andrew L. Pratt. Justice J. Kirk Studstrup approved the class action settlement in the amount of $250,000.
The lawsuit was filed against Pratt on Nov. 7, 2002 on behalf of class representatives Lucile Shimkus and Bertha Dickey. The class includes 76 members, all of whom will receive a portion of the proceeds of the settlement.
Pratt is the former owner of Laite and Pratt Funeral Home in Camden. In January 2001, three business partners, John Long, Julie Clement and Rob Laite, acquired the property after Key Bank foreclosed. The business was renamed the Robert E. Laite Funeral Home Inc.
A year after the 2001 foreclosure, Pratt was facing the loss of his license to own and operate a funeral home after more than 20 people filed complaints with the state, including 13 Camden area residents, alleging that Pratt mishandled money from prepaid funerals while he was director of Laite and Pratt Funeral Home. Since 2002, Pratt has been forbidden by the state to work in the funeral industry in Maine.
The parties involved in the class action agreed on the settlement of $250,000 plus costs on Nov. 21, 2003. Since then, Pratt has sold his residential property and another 90-acre parcel of land in Windsor in order to fund the settlement.
