Roman Catholic Church Settles

Report Fraud
Case ID: 4510 | Miscellaneous | 10/31/2005

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Hartford agreed to pay $22 million to settle lawsuits filed by 43 people who say they were abused by priests, a lawyer representing some of those plaintiffs announced.

The settlement was the result of talks mediated by U.S. Magistrate Judge William Garfinkle in Bridgeport, attorney for the plaintiffs said.

The alleged abuse dated back as far as the 1960s and involved 14 priests of former priests, at least four of whom are deceased.

"By giving victims a voice, we can change the behavior of the church and finally force the archdiocese to acknowledge responsibility for the past," plaintiffs attorney said.
