Henry Ford Hospital agreed settle two class action lawsuits filed by seven hospital employees who alleged employment discrimination against African-Americans dating from 1998. Members of the class that will receive $350 each include hospital employees employed specifically between July 10, 1998, and Dec. 31, 2002. An additional $1 million will fund a series of career-development, mentoring and diversity-training programs at the hospital.
The lawsuit, filed in 2001 in U.S. District Court in Detroit, claimed that Henry Ford Health System denied equal job assignments, pay levels, promotions, training and other employment opportunities to African-American, nonunion employees. The suit also claimed that the health system “harassed” and “disciplined” employees who opposed “discriminatory practices.”
Under the agreement, which has received preliminary approval from the federal court, there will be no determination or finding that Henry Ford discriminated against African-Americans at the hospital.
