Former Troubled Youths Sue for Their Right to Attend School

A class action lawsuit has been filed in the Southern District Court of Ohio against Bob Taft for violations of civil right law. Class members seek declaratory and injunctive relief.

Specifically, the complaint alleges that youths and disabled children from the ages of seven (7) to twenty-one (21), who have a history of involvement with the juvenile or adult court systems, have been denied a proper and free education in public schools after being discharged from court-ordered settings.

Note: The plaintiffs' names are not revealed in the complaint because they are juveniles.

According to the guards, Wackenhut has violated the federal Fair Labor Standards Act as well as New York labor law. The action seeks compensatory and liquidated damages as well as declaratory and injunctive relief. As a collective action, all potential claimants must "opt-in" to the action in order to be considered. The guards have requested that the court issue notice to all potential claimants.
 
A statewide class action has been filed in California against collection specialist, Bridgeport Financial, Inc. The action is brought on behalf of all California consumers who have received collection letters from Bridgeport that required them to dispute the validity of the debt under collection in writing only. The action is brought under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and seeks statutory damages as well as injunctive and declaratory relief.
 
The American Civil Liberties Union filed a class-action lawsuit in a South Dakota court, challenging the constitutionality of a federal law that denies financial aid to college students convicted of drug offenses.
 
A Los Angeles Superior Court Judge granted preliminary approval to a $5,348,000 settlement of class action litigation. Finding the proposed settlement to be fair and reasonable, the order deals with disputed payroll practices in the entertainment industry in California.

The action is brought on behalf of all current and former employees, who since March 2001, were not paid proper statutory overtime for all hours worked beyond 40 per week. The action is brought under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act and seeks statutory and liquidated damages as well as declaratory and injunctive relief. As a collective action, all potential claimants are required to "opt-in" to the action in order to be considered part of the class. The employees have requested that the court issue notice to all potential class members.

The action is brought on behalf of all current and former employees, who since February 2001, were not paid proper statutory overtime for all hours worked beyond 40 per week. As a collective action, all potential claimants are required to "opt-in" to the action in order to be considered part of the class. The employees have requested that the court issue notice to all potential class members.
