Other Employment Cases of Interest

Employees of Pilgrim's Pride Corporation who came to the company as a result of Pilgrim's Pride's acquisition of Con-Agra's poultry division have filed a class action suit against the company. The workers claim that at the time that Pilgrim's Pride acquired the Con-Agra division, it promised the former Con-Agra employees that it had a compensation and bonus program similar to Con-Agra's and that the employees would not suffer any loss of compensation or bonus pay as a result of the acquisition. The plaintiffs claim that these statements were unfair and deceptive and that in fact they did suffer a loss of compensation and bonus opportunities.
 
The parties have reached a tentative $21 million settlement in a class action filed against the Morrison Knudsen Savings Plan, the Morrison Knudsen Corporation Employee Stock Ownership Plan, other various corporate defendants, and 29 individual defendants on behalf of all current and former participants of the Savings Plan who held shares of Morrison Knudsen stock in their savings plan accounts on or after July 19, 1994, and all individuals who were participants of the Morrison Knudsen Employee Stock Ownership Plan on or after July 19, 1994. The settlement notice does not indicate a claims deadline— persons eligible to take part in the settlement should contact the attorneys for the class for more information.
 
Price-fixing by powerful cartels occurs in unlikely-seeming places. The jury has returned a $56 million verdict in an antitrust class action filed against three Maine blueberry processing companies on behalf of Maine wild blueberry growers who directly or indirectly sold wild blueberries to them from February 28, 1996, through February 28, 2000. The money will not be distributed until all possible appeals have been exhausted.

The case involves violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act which establishes minimum wage, overtime pay, recordkeeping, and child labor standards affecting full-time and part-time workers in the private sector and in Federal, State, and local governments.
