A letter was sent out last July or August about the theft of personal and financial information by an employee at Certegy Check Services, Inc. A settlement has now been reached about that theft.
 
A class action lawsuit has been filed in the Northern District Court of Alabama against Franklin Collection Services, Inc. for violations of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA). Class members seek actual and statutory damages, attorney's fees and costs of the litigation.
 
The parties have reached a proposed $7.87 million settlement of a class action against Republic Mortgage Insurance Company on behalf of mortgage borrowers whose mortgage was insured by Republic under a certificate that became effective between December 18, 1996, and March 31, 2003. The action claims that the insurance was provided on terms that were very favorable to the mortgage lenders. To recover under the settlement, class members must submit a claim form postmarked no later than September 8, 2003.
 
Several class actions have been filed against financial services company UICI (NYSE:UCI) and certain of its officers and directors by stockholders who purchased the company's common stock between January 17, 2000, and July 21, 2003. The actions claim that the defendants violated federal securities laws by issuing a series of material misrepresentations to the market over this time period, thereby artificially inflating the price of the company's securities.
 
The parties have reached a $1.65 million settlement in an administrative proceeding filed against Fairbanks Capital Corporation on behalf of nearly 40,000 Florida borrowers over claims that the company required illegal late fees and other charges. Persons eligible to take part in the settlement should contact the attorneys who prosecuted the action.
 
A nationwide class action has been filed in Kentucky against mortgage insurance giant, Triad Guaranty Insurance Corporation. The action is brought on behalf of all U.S. residents who have obtained mortgage insurance from Triad at a less than best rate, and have not been informed that an adverse decision was made against them as a result of utilizing a credit report. The action is brought under the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act and seeks actual and statutory damages as well as injunctive and declaratory relief.
