Federal law protects workers from unexpected job losses due to surprise layoffs. A class action has been filed against accounting giant Arthur Anderson, LLP on behalf of former employees who allege that they were laid off during a 90-day period in violation of the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act.
 
The parties have reached a tentative settlement in a class action filed against Shaw Industries, Inc., on behalf of California businesses and residents who performed work in connection with floor covering products under warranty by Shaw in California between September 19, 1998, and June 4, 2004. The action alleges that Shaw did not properly compensate its dealers for activities undertaken in connection with the service, repair, and replacement of floor covering products covered by warranty. On Tuesday, October 18, 2005, three African American former employees of UBS Financial Services, Inc. ("UBSFS"), filed a class action lawsuit against the company in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York alleging racial discrimination in hiring, promotion and other employment practices. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of all African Americans who were, are, or will be employed, or who sought employment at UBSFS, as brokers, non-broker officers, and other professional positions. The lawsuit seeks to put an end to years of racial discrimination at UBSFS.
