The parties have reached a tentative settlement in a class action filed against Shaw Industries, Inc., on behalf of California businesses and residents who performed work in connection with floor covering products under warranty by Shaw in California between September 19, 1998, and June 4, 2004. On August 4, 2003, the court granted final approval to the parties' $1.5 million settlement in an action filed against Colorado Central Station Casino operator Anchor Coin, Inc. on behalf of Hispanic employees who allege that they were verbally harassed and subjected to "English-only" rules in violation of Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. The casino is in Black Hawk, Colorado. Eligible claimants should contact the EEOC for further information.
 
Federal law protects workers from unexpected job losses due to surprise layoffs. A class action has been filed against accounting giant Arthur Anderson, LLP on behalf of former employees who allege that they were laid off during a 90-day period in violation of the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act.
 
Though modeling is often seen as an easy job, the hours are grueling and jobs can be few and far between. A class action has been filed against numerous prominent New York modeling agencies on behalf of thousands of current and former models who worked for the agencies since June 1998, who allege that the agencies have violated state and federal antitrust laws by conspiring to fix their commissions.
 
Client Service Managers employed by business publisher Thomson Corporation have filed a class action lawsuit claiming that the company routinely requires its client service managers to work hours in excess of 40 per week without receiving overtime. The complaint alleges that the client service managers are not in a job classification that is exempt from overtime and that failing to pay them overtime violates the federal Fair Labor Standards Act. The client service managers seek an award of the unpaid overtime together with interest, costs and other damages.
 
Two Watsonville, California residents are accusing La Esperanza Markets of failing to pay dozens of former and current employees hundreds of hours in overtime. Guillermo Mendez and Jose Contreras Moreno and their attorneys filed a class action lawsuit in Santa Cruz County Superior Court. They're also alleging that the owners of the chain of stores, Javier and Emilia Vazquez, rarely granted workers their 10-minute and 30-minute lunch breaks, a requirement under California law.
