A class action has been filed against Ford Motor Credit Company on behalf of African American customers who allege racial discrimination in connection with the company's financing plan in violation of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act. The action seeks unspecified compensatory and punitive damages.
Named plaintiff Joyce Jones and three other African Americans sued Ford Motor Credit Company under the Equal Credit Opportunity Act. They alleged that the lender allowed dealers to mark up the financing rate using subjective criteria and that this policy results in higher rates for African American customers than for similarly situated white customers.
After a lengthy journey to the appellate court, this case has been sent back to the district court for further proceedings. African Americans who applied for credit through Ford Motor Credit Company for a Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mazda, Aston Martin, or Volvo may be eligible to take part in this action.

The class has been certified in a class action against debt collection agency Allied Interstate, Inc. on behalf of all persons with Illinois addresses who, on or after February 10, 2002, have been sent a collections letter regarding an unpaid residential telephone service debt that offered to settle the debt at a 50% or greater discount by the agency, but contained a purported deadline for payment. The suit seeks to certify a statewide class and collect actual and punitive damages on behalf of the plaintiffs. A state wide class action has been filed in Pennsylvania against collection specialists, Bronson & Migliaccio, LLP. The action is brought on behalf of all Pennsylvania consumers who, since January 30, 2003, have received a "form type" collection letter from Bronson & Migliaccio. The action is brought under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and seeks statutory damages as well as injunctive and declaratory relief. Credit counseling can be an effective way to manage debt that has gotten out of hand. A nationwide class action has been filed against debt management company CRS Financial Services, Inc. and two associated companies on behalf of all persons who used the companies’ debt management services from March 15, 1998, to the present. The action alleges that CRS violated the federal Consumer Protection Credit Act and the Florida Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act when it failed to service their debts in a timely fashion.
