Hewlett-Packard Pavilion Notebook Computer Owners Complain of Malfunctioning LCD Displays

Report Fraud
Case ID: 2806 | Technology | 10/22/2003

A nationwide class action has been filed against computer giant Hewlett-Packard, Inc. on behalf of purchasers of Pavilion Notebook computers who allege that the LCD displays in their computers are inherently defective, and that the company has taken no action to remedy the problem. The action seeks unspecified compensatory damages.

The action alleges that there are defects in Pavilion Notebooks that result in LCD display problems--they often flicker and sometimes black out for no apparent reason. These problems not only cause inconvenience, but loss of time and money for attempted repairs. Owners allegedly have to spend hours on the phone with Hewlett-Packard technical support, often to no avail. Though these defects are allegedly known to Hewlett-Packard, it has not taken meaningful steps to make consumers aware of them or replace or recall its notebooks.

Named plaintiff Ed Rutledge allegedly experienced problems with his Pavilion display during the warranty period and sent his computer to HP for repair. Less than four months after his computer was returned, but after the warranty period expired, the display allegedly went black again. This time, HP demanded more than $600 to fix the problem. The action alleges that HP should permanently fix the problem at no cost or replace his entire computer with a defect-free equivalent or better model, and that HP should do so for every consumer whose HP computer has similar backlight display problems.
