Female Exployees at Northshore Mining Company Claim Discrimination |

A class action filed against the Northshore Mining Company of Silver Bay, Minnesota, by its female employees has been certified by the court. The case alleges that the company has been systematically discriminating against its female employees by offering them less pay, less training and less frequent promotions. The suit seeks an injunction against Northshore, prohibiting the company from engaging in discriminatory practices, as well as payment of lost wages due to delayed promotions, punitive damages and payment for past and future mental anguish. Northshore denies all allegations.
After analyzing over 30,000 pages of documents, a statistician employed by the plaintiffs determined that, on average, female employees have been paid almost $3000 less in regular wages and almost $1000 less in overtime wages than their male counterparts. The documents also revealed a much slower rate of advancement for women employed by Northshore.
The court is currently sending notice to potential class members.

A class action lawsuit has been filed in United States District Court against Exoticus Nauticus dba Wild Deuces Casino and Sports Bar. The case involves violations of federal labor law. The lawsuit alleges former Water Services human resources manager Robin Brown, contributed to the problem by not being receptive to the employees’ concerns. Brown is now human resources manager at Metro’s Department of Human Resources.
The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has cleared the way for a group of Metro Water Services employees who sued the department for racial discrimination to proceed as a class action.
Bank of America Corporation, the second largest American bank, agreed to pay as much as $9 million to settle a lawsuit brought by California loan department workers who claimed they had wrongly been denied overtime pay. A statewide collective action has been filed in Florida against Joysi Group, Inc. and subsidiary, Vijay Group, Inc. Joysi and Vijay operate convenience stores in South Florida, in particular the "Joysi Food Market" and "S&G Market". The action is brought on behalf of all current and former employees who, since December 31, 2000, were deprived of proper overtime pay by Joysi and Vijay. The action is brought under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act and seeks back pay, statutory damages, liquidated damages as well as injunctive and declaratory
relief. As a collective action, all potential claimants must voluntarily "opt-in" to the case in order to be considered part of the class. The employees have requested that the court issue notice to all potential claimants.
