Cheap Tickets, Inc. Buys $1.1 Million Fare on Settlement Train to Get Out of Sexual Harassment Action

The parties have reached a $1.1 million settlement in an enforcement action filed against discount fare seller Cheap Tickets, Inc., on behalf of current and former female employees working at Cheap Tickets' Los Angeles call center between 2000 and the center's closing in September 2001. The action alleged that the employees were subjected to a sexually hostile work environment by their supervisors and retaliated against when they reported the harassment in violation of Title VII of the federal Civil Rights Act of 1964. Eligible claimants should contact the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

The action alleged that Cheap Tickets ignored female employee Latasha Scott's complaints of sexual harassment. In retaliation for either her original complaints or her communications to the EEOC, Cheap Tickets allegedly fired Ms. Scott. Other female employees were allegedly subjected to unwelcome propositions, inappropriate genital touching, "really bad" sexual comments from male managers and managers positioning themselves such that their genitals would touch the women's bodies, starting in or around 2000.

The action sought an order forcing Cheap Tickets to start following equal employment opportunity policies and an order prohibiting the company from allowing sex discrimination or retaliating against whistle-blowers. It also sought up to $300,000 for each affected employee in back pay, front pay and damages.

A nationwide class/collective action has been filed in California against truck stop Giant, Pilot Travel Centers, LLC and its parent company, Pilot Corporation. The action is brought on behalf of all general managers, co-managers, operations managers, sales managers, guest service managers, and human resource managers who since December 11, 1999, in California and December 11, 2000, nationwide were denied overtime compensation by Pilot. The action is brought both under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act and the California labor and business professions codes and seeks back pay, liquidated damages and statutory penalties as well as declaratory and injunctive relief. The action is both a class action, for violations of California law, and a collective action under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act. Those residing outside of California who wish to be considered for the action must "opt-in" voluntarily to be considered a claimant. The managers have requested the court give notice to all potential claimants.
 
Nearly 7,000 Washington child-care providers have agreed to a class action settlement against the state of Washington. This will require the state to reform it's investigative practices.
 
Page Unified School District received notice of a class action lawsuit being filed against it by the Diné Communities for Equality in Education and nine parents who allege that the Page Unified School District's (PUSD) elementary schools are segregated into “Indian” and “white” schools.
 
A federal judge has approved class-action status for a suit by as many as 2,000 women who claim they were illegally strip-searched after being arrested in San Mateo County in 2002 and 2003.
 
A class action has been filed on behalf of home health care workers employed by the Central State Community Services, Inc., a Tulsa based provider of home health services. The suit alleges that workers employed at Central State between 2001 and 2004 routinely worked more than 40 hours a week but were not paid overtime as required by the Federal Fair Labor Standards Act. The plaintiffs seek an award of the unpaid overtime with interest, attorney’s fees and costs, as well as liquidated damages and equitable relief.
