A $1.2 million settlement has been reached between the parties in a class action filed against streaming media company RealNetworks, Inc. on behalf of Californians who allege that the company gathered and sold personally identifiable information regarding them between March 1, 1999, and March 1, 2000, in violation of California's consumer privacy laws. Claims must be submitted via the Internet by August 27, 2003, to be considered valid.
The settlement provides various mechanisms by which RealNetworks' products users are guaranteed that their rights to privacy under California law will be protected. Eligible class members will also be given a seven-month subscription to RealOne Player Plus and a one-month subscription to RadioPass Service at no charge. The RealOne Player Plus subscription retails for $9.95 per month, and the RadioPass Service is normally $5.95 per month.
The settlement class is composed of persons who, between March 1, 1999, and March 1, 2000, were California residents and who acquired and used RealJukebox products during that time. RealNetworks is maintaining a website at http://www.real.com/calpriv/031903 on which class members may register to receive settlement benefits. To receive the free subscriptions, you will be required to give your current name and address, your name and address between March 1, 1999, and March 1, 2000, and a valid credit/debit card number or checking account information for verification purposes. Upon receipt of this information, RealNetworks will verify the legitimacy of your claim and send you an e-mail notification of acceptance or rejection within 30 days.
