PCS Subscribers Allege Sprint Posts Bogus 911 Charges to Their Bills

A class action has been filed against wireless provider Sprint Corporation on behalf of subscribers who allege that the company wrongfully adds a "Federal E 911" fee, "USA Regulatory" fee, or similar unilaterally-imposed assessment to their bills in breach of the company's terms of service agreements and the advertised prices for Sprint service plans. The action seeks unspecified compensatory damages and an order prohibiting the company's use of these alleged profit-making tactics.

Kathy Flaherty alleges that these charges were not referred to by Sprint at the time of her purchase of a service plan, and that the charges were imposed unilaterally by Sprint at its discretion. The addition of "E 911 emergency number" charges, allegedly listed on her bill as "USA Regulatory Obligations & Fees," increased her plan's cost so that it was higher than the advertised price that she had relied on.

The proposed class of Sprint customers includes all persons who were charged by Sprint and paid a "Federal E 911" or "USA Regulatory" fee or similar unilaterally-imposed assessment. The action alleges that Sprint's practices are part of a new trend in the wireless telecommunications industry--the use of 911 emergency numbers as a pretext for adding improper and excessive charges. Sprint allegedly advertises fixed prices for bundles of minutes then adds these bogus charges that appear to be justified to unsuspecting customers, increasing their profits illegitimately.

The WGA program collects hardware and software data, delivering it to Microsoft servers. The stored information is then used to warn of possible piracy violations.
 
The class has been certified in several consolidated class actions against Internet consulting firm marchFIRST, Inc., (formerly AMEX:MQ) and certain of its officers and directors by stockholders who purchased the company's common stock between March 23, 2000, and November 20, 2000. The actions claim that the defendants violated federal securities laws by issuing a series of material misrepresentations to the market over this time period, thereby artificially inflating the price of the company's securities. If you wish to remain a member of the class, you are not required to do anything at the present time.
 
The parties have reached a final $7.5 million settlement in an action filed against Internet World Media, Inc. and Penton Media, Inc. on behalf of stockholders who tendered their shares of Mecklermedia Corporation to Internet World Media in the tender offer commenced by Penton Media in October 1998, or exchanged their shares of Mecklermedia stock in the subsequent merger of Mecklermedia and Internet World Media. Claims forms must be postmarked on or before August 30, 2004, to be considered valid.
 
When you are charged a late fee, the fee generally has to be related to the amounts that the company has to spend collecting your payment. The class has been certified in an action filed against Cox Communications of New Orleans, Inc. on behalf of all current and former residential subscribers of Cox cable television service in Orleans, Jefferson, St. Charles, and St. Bernard Parishes who have been assessed or who have paid a late fee to Cox in connection with their cable television service. Class members do not need to take any action at the present time to remain eligible.
 
Internet security is big business in the aftermath of the 2003 worm attacks. Several class actions have been filed against Internet security solutions provider SonicWALL, Inc. (Nasdaq: SNWL) and certain of its officers and directors by stockholders who purchased the company's common stock between October 17, 2000, and April 3, 2002. The actions claim that the defendants violated federal securities laws by issuing a series of misrepresentations to the market over this time period, thereby artificially inflating the price of the company's securities.
